Nokia 6700

Nokia are pitching the 6700 Classic at the sort of customer who might have bought the original 6300 when it came out two years ago - typically those on contract looking for an upgrade. The €235 price tag (before tax and subsidy) should mean that the 6700 Classic will be free for almost all contract customers.

Unusually, the Nokia 6700 Classic is a GPS device but not a smartphone. The only other handset in Nokia's range like this is the slightly more upmarket Nokia 6260 Slide, but Series 40 devices appear to be cheaper to make and it definitely makes the 6700 Classic good value for money.

On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. Videos can be recorded at up to 640 x 480 pixels at 15 frames per second (or 352 x 288 at 30fps). There appears to be no support for geotagging, but the 6700 can upload video clips to Ovi and Flickr which should make things easy.
The display is a 2.2" 240 x 320 pixel panel capable of 16 million colours, which is a little larger than the screen on the 6300. It's not a large display, but it should suit most users.
Underneath, the Nokia 6700 Classic is a quad-band GSM phone with support for 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz WCDMA / UMTS, but there is no WiFi. The GSM and UMTS support makes the 6700 a real world phone. The 6700 also features HSDPA giving a maximum download speed of 10 Mbps, and HSUPA with a maximum speed of 2 Mbps. You can see that the 6700 might make an excellent modem when used with a laptop PC.
Of course, the Nokia 6700 Classic has Bluetooth, microSD expandable memory, a multimedia player and a web browser. The GPS comes with the Nokia Maps application, although a subscription is required for more advanced features.

Weighing 117 grams, the 6700 is 26 grams heavier than the 6300, and a little larger at 110 x 45 x 11mm. Maximum talktime on 3G is 4 hours with about 12 days standby time.

It's a good looking phone, but we have never been very keen on these "flat" keypads that some Nokia devices come with. We suspect that some customers might be happier with the arrangement on the new 6303 instead.

Along with the 6303 and 2700 handsets, the Nokia 6700 Classic seems to offer an ideal combination of features, styling and value for money.

Nokia N91

3G phone with 4GB of music storage (08/06/2006)Nokia's music phone, the N91, is big in two senses. It has a huge (for a phone) 4GB of internal storage, and physically it's a large beastie.

Dealing with the latter characteristic first, dimensions of 113mm tall, 55mm wide and 22mm thick make the N91 feel like something of a blast from the past in the hand and the pocket. The weight, at 164g, puts it on the heavy side for a handset too.

If size and weight are not the most positive of characteristics, the large amount of built-in storage is precisely the opposite. The N91 is first and foremost a music phone, and that 4GB of storage capacity is enough for hundreds of tunes.

Running the Symbian Series 60 software has not stopped Nokia catering for media synchronisation through Windows Media Player 10. You can also use Nokia's own PC Suite to share music and synchronise with Outlook, or simply connect the N91 to your PC with the provided USB cable and drag and drop files between handset and computer.
On-device music controls are placed on the front of the handset beneath the screen and are large and easy to access. Slide these down and the number pad is revealed.

Music sound volume and quality are both excellent for a mobile phone. The headset comes in two sections, with a remote controller and voice call microphone separated from the earbuds themselves, and both using 3.5mm connectors so you can substitute your own preferred headset.

Music playback pauses when calls come in and carries on from where it left off when you end a call. There is even stereo output via Bluetooth if you have a headset that caters for this.

It isn't all about music, of course. A 2-megapixel stills and video camera sits on the back of the casing, an FM radio with twenty presets and Visual Radio support is built in, and all the usual Series 60 fare for managing contacts and calendar items and suchlike is also here.

The N91 is a 3G handset, but there is no front-facing camera for video calls. This seems like a weird omission in what is in other ways such a multimedia-rich handset. We find it hard to believe that Nokia couldn't have found room for a front camera in such a chunky handset.

Nokia E90

The Nokia E90 Communicator is the latest line of business-like Nokia Smart phones. While this is still a beast of a phone in terms of size it is noticeably smaller than the former 9500 Communicator and manages to shave 20g off its weight.
This is the first Communicator with HSDPA and with an 800 x 352 16m-colour inner screen it can display whole Webpage widths in fine detail.Other connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Quad Band, GPS, and USB 2.0.
Having GPS on this phone will be a great feature for business users, as it could negate the need for second device for navigation.
I recently had had chance to play around with a model quickly and while I am not exactly a business user I do like functionality over form. I currently use the MDA Vario II which I have loved and the Nokia E90 is actually thinner than the Vario. However E90 is one tall phone, standing at 132mm tall it dwarves my Vario by 10mm. Unfortunately because of its height I can never really see using a phone like this as my main phone.

This tri-mode world phone supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks. NOKIA N96

The N96 sports a slightly bigger 2.8″ screen compared to its predecessor the N95, and 16 gigabytes of inbuilt flash memory expandable to 24GB using a micro SD card. We predict it to hit the market by September 2008 with an estimated price tag of around 600 Euros in Europe.
Apart from the stunning 5 Mpx Carl Ziess optics it will feature near high definition video capture at 30 frames per second. It features a 3.5mm audio jack so that you can listen to your favorite music with the most comfortable headset of your choice. Nokia is also highlighting Ovi, its online media and software sharing portal which would be integrated to other services like flickr and media store. Ovi in Finnish would mean “door” and that’s what it aims at achieving. All this highlights Nokia’s commitment in delivering a media powerhouse.
The N96 will come preloaded with Nokia Maps 2.0 with inbuilt maps for over 150 countries (and growing) that will feature geotagging with Assisted GPS (A-GPS); something on lines with tagging the places you have been. Nokia maps will also help you with road routes and will include an interesting feature, “Walk”; with an inbuilt accelerometer and a compass the device will guide pedestrians as they progress on their route.
On the look and feel front, it sports a shiny neat black stone finished surface with a steel rim and unique flat keypad with illuminated labels. It has a handy kickstand that pops out from the back to allow you to rest the device on a flat surface to hand free viewing of your favorite videos and television programs over integrated Wifi or HSDPA.

Nokia N90 is a new generated mobile.The Nokia XpressMusic 5800, also known as the first touch screen phone from Nokia, has arrived! Featuring probably the best hardware (HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS) for a music phone, the Nokia 5800 is set to rival the N series in terms of functionality! The new touch-enabled S60 operating system is said to carry the hope of Nokia in advancing its share in the smartphone sector. Does it have enough muscle for a smartphone? Let’s find out now.

The package is full of stuff! Not only does it contain the phone, a battery, a charger, two styluses, a headset, a video-out cable, a connectivity cable, a carrying case, a wrist strap with “guitar pick stylus”, a user’s guide and a mini DVD, it also comes with a stand! The stand is perfect for movie-watching because it keeps the phone steadily tilted for the best viewing angle.
The back cover is covered with rubber to add more friction to it, we like the straight cover very much. The camera on the Nokia 5800 is nothing short of impressiveness. The 3.2MP camera has Carl Zeiss “certified” optics, dual-LED flash and auto-focus. Photo quality is superb with pretty accurate exposure and color.

The 3.2MP camera comes with neither a flash nor auto-focus but it has night mode and burst mode (maximum 9 shots in a row) to make up for it. The camera is on par with other budget model. On the top of the phone there are the power button and the 3.5mm earphone jack, which is typical for the XpressMusic line of phone. The phone also comes with a stereo speaker.

The Nokia 5800 remotely resembles the Apple iPhone 3G, Samsung Omnia, LG Renoir and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 due to its big screen. The phone is somewhat thicker at 15.5mm, however. The home, answer/reject buttons are the only buttons on the front surface. Obviously Nokia (and Samsung) learnt from the Apple iPhone that even a touch-screen phone needs some physical buttons to quickly answer or reject calls.

The 2008 Innovation Award goes to Nokia for the most challenging SIM removal design. If you have accidentally destroyed the user manual, there is a simple guide to climb Mount Everest on the back of the battery slot. When you have successfully “pushed” the SIM card out, you can “pull” it from the left side of the phone. By the way, microSD card is a lot easier to remove!

No smartphone is complete without a stylus, Nokia 5800 is no exception. The exceptionally long stylus does not have any metal to reinforce its strength, so be careful with it, The built-in accelerometer can detect the orientation of the phone, simply hold it horizontally and it will switch to the landscape mode.

The virtual keyboard aims at making the best use of the 3.2” screen. The small white area in the upper middle section displays what you have typed so far. Of course, big is not always powerful (like the SPB keyboard found on WM machines) and we hope Nokia can come up with a more effective input method that doesn’t require users to switch to-and-fro between the program and keyboard.

It seems that the new S60 system isn’t making the best use of the screen. There are a lot of “free spaces” on the home screen. It would certainly help if Nokia can make the icon and clock larger by default. Being one of the XpressMusic phones, the Nokia 5800 does not disappoint in music function. The very capable music player, 3.5mm phone jack and music enhancement features are all there.

The Nokia 5800 does not disappoint. It has a friendly price tag, good touch screen and well-controlled thickness. The backward support of older S60 applications is very welcomed, too. I would recommend this phone without reservation.

The Nokia 5800 has been initially released as a SIM free mobile phone with no network locks or lengthy contract deals to sign, this means that the handset can be purchased as a gift or to replace a lost or stolen mobile phone

Nokia N810

The N810 WiMAX edition is essentially the same hardware as the standard N810 but with the added WiMAX capability. The WiMAX differentiates itself visually with a darker color scheme. It also runs a new version of the Internet Tablet OS, which will also be made available to the N800 and N810 later this year.
